A Storage Unit Safe Enough for A Childhood Friend

“Wow, if you’d told me a year ago that I’d be loading all my stuff into a Norfolk, Virginia, storage unit – I would have said you were crazy!” exclaimed Sarah. “It’s so strange to think that this town is our new home now. I just can’t wrap my mind around it.”  “Yea,” John replied. “I can’t believe I’m a pilot now. All those extra hours finally paid off. I can’t wait to start this job!”

The two of them sighed, each deep in their own thoughts. Sarah broke the silence, saying, “Well until we get a bigger place, this self storage facility will have to do. I’m glad the rates are so cheap here for such a roomy storage unit. “Do you think I should at least grab that box of kitchen stuff? I have no clue if your company’s apartment has anything in it.” “Well, the apartment’s literally a block away and the storage units are open 24 hours so we can always run over if we need anything. Then again, babe, you know how much I like to eat – so we’d better grab that box now,” John laughed.
Chuckling quietly, Sarah followed her hungry husband out the door. Entering their new apartment, she was struck by the feeling of unfamiliarity and emptiness. John had to run by the company office to fill out some paperwork and meet the crew and offered to drop Sarah at a nearby coffee shop, but Sarah decided she would rather stay in the apartment and unpack the few boxes they had.

A few hours later, Sarah had unpacked everything and the once empty room was now filled with familiar objects – clothes hung up in the closet, that family quilt on their new bed, her guitar leaning against the wall and pictures of family cloaking every available surface. Sitting in the silence, taking it all in Sarah, felt somewhat comforted by the transformed room.

But the homesickness was still there – as much as she tried to ignore it. However, there was no point in dwelling on the negatives. She had something that would make her feel better in a jiffy – a childhood friend that had survived many changes in her life, from the teenage years to marriage. He had been a gift from her grandma right before she passed away – a treasure to Sarah.

Looking around the room, she tried to figure out where she had put him. Where could he be? Did I leave him at home? He must be at the storage facility – yes that’s it!

Desperate to know, Sarah grabbed her car keys and rushed out the door. Two minutes later she was rushing down a line of bright orange storage units. “Ahhh – what’s the unit number” she thought out loud. “Unit B23? B24? Oh yea it says here on the key – storage unit B15.” Within a minute, Sarah had found the unit and turned the key in the lock. She opened the door to find herself surrounded by boxes. Racking her brain she thought to herself, “Where would I have packed him?”

“Wait a minute, Sarah. Don’t panic. Just think,” Sarah scolded herself as she sat down on one of the boxes. “Ok, I packed up my bedroom last Friday. I’m sure he was there. No – wait, I took him out again on Saturday. Why did I take him out? Oh yea, I was feeling worried about the move.” Waiting for the memory to appear, Sarah leaned back and let her eyes adjust to the lighting in the room.

For a big metal box it was quite warm and comfortable. Out of the corner of her eye, Sarah noticed that a box across the unit had a rip down the side. Well, her packing had gotten a bit careless with fifty-something boxes to pack. She’d better tape it up so it was better protected. Walking up to it, she noticed she had written in big black letters on the side – “Art and Craft Stuff.” Perfect, the tape would probably be in here. I think I put it on the top. Sarah pulled back the cardboard and stuck her hand in to feel around for the tape.

Suddenly, Sarah felt something fluffy brush against her hand. “What’s something fluffy doing in this box?” she thought. She grabbed the fluffy thing, pulled hard and out popped – “Teddy!” Sarah exclaimed. Yes, her worn old precious childhood friend had been here all along.  Sarah remembered then that she had quickly stuffed him in the box, thinking she would grab him later. Sarah laughed at herself in relief and hugged Teddy close. She left the storage unit, drove back to the apartment, and flopped onto her bed with Teddy in hand. She looked around the room again and suddenly it all didn’t seem so bad after all.
